Google Launches Stitch Agent at I/O 2026: Real-Time AI Design Tool That Builds Interfaces as You Type

At Google I/O 2026, Google unveiled a major upgrade to Stitch its AI-native UI design platform introducing a streaming design agent, multiplayer editing, and interactive prototyping, all available globally at no cost, directly challenging Figma's dominance.

Google used its annual I/O developer conference on May 20, 2026, to announce a significant expansion of Stitch, its AI-powered user interface design platform. The update introduces a real-time streaming design agent that renders UI components onto the canvas as a designer types or speaks, replacing the previous turn-based workflow in which users had to wait for a generation to complete before providing feedback. Both the streaming agent and simultaneous multi-user collaboration two of Stitch's most anticipated additions are available globally at no cost, effective immediately.

What Stitch Can Now Do

The new Stitch Agent represents a fundamental shift in how the tool operates. Rather than submitting a prompt and waiting, designers can now steer a generation mid-process — stopping a layout direction before it finishes and redirecting in real time. Voice input, first introduced in March 2026, is now integrated into the streaming loop, enabling commands such as 'give me three different menu options' or 'show me this screen in different color palettes' while watching the canvas respond during the instruction itself.

Additional capabilities introduced or expanded at I/O 2026 include: importing existing codebases or design files; design system extraction from any URL; the DESIGN.md format, an agent-friendly markdown file for exporting and importing design rules between tools; interactive prototyping that converts static designs to clickable flows; an Agent Manager for exploring multiple design ideas in parallel; voice critique; and direct export to developer tools including Google AI Studio and Antigravity 2.0.

A Direct Challenge to Figma

Figma has been the dominant paid platform in professional interface design, with its standard professional plan priced at $15 per editor per month. Google's decision to make Stitch's most competitive features — real-time streaming and multiplayer collaboration — available for free is a direct challenge to that pricing model. Independent reviewers had previously identified Stitch's lack of multiplayer support as its most significant competitive limitation relative to Figma. That limitation no longer exists as of today.

Stitch was originally launched at Google I/O in May 2025 as a modest Google Labs experiment, capable of generating single UI screens from text prompts. A March 2026 update introduced multi-screen generation, an infinite canvas, and interactive prototyping. The I/O 2026 update adds the streaming agent and multiplayer editing, completing the platform's transformation from an experiment to a direct competitor in the professional design tools market.

Availability and Context

Stitch is available globally wherever Gemini is supported, for users aged 18 and over, in English only. The tool is part of Google's broader I/O 2026 push around agentic AI — the company's framing for the shift from AI assistants that respond to queries toward AI agents that take actions and participate in workflows autonomously. Other announcements at I/O 2026 included Gemini 3.5 Flash and Pro, the multimodal Gemini Omni model, and updates to the Antigravity 2.0 development environment.
